Learning Activity: "Self-determination & Inclusion by Theater" with Teatro da Vila

On May 16th, Palmela hosted an inspiring Learning Activity on the theme of "Self-determination & Inclusion by Theater". This European project, coordinated by Iscte - Lisbon University Institute, aims to train and empower community theatre groups for the organic inclusion of autistic people. Among the participants were representatives of the Teatro da Vila - Pinhal Novo group, who joined groups from Spain and Italy, such as representatives of the associations Autism-Europe, Diversamente ODV (Italy), Autismo Sevilla (Spain) and Inovar Autismo (Portugal).

The Teatro da Vila project is an innovative initiative that fosters artistic expression and development in various forms, such as music, theatre, dance, and visual arts. What makes this project unique is its inclusive approach, which ensures the participation of everyone, including blind and partially sighted persons and young autistic people. This inclusive philosophy was widely highlighted and celebrated during the event in Palmela, underlining the importance of art as a vehicle for social inclusion and personal development.

Teatro da Vila, with the support of the Educational Service of the Municipality of Palmela, prepared a series of enriching activities for the visitors, which included a staged visit to the historic Palmela Castle and a visit to the exhibition at the Cine-Teatro S. João. These activities provided a unique opportunity for participants to explore the rich cultural traditions of this municipality while fostering the exchange of innovative pedagogical practices between the different groups and associations present.

Welcoming the participants to this Learning Activity was an enriching and inspiring experience. We strengthened our shared dedication to including and celebrating diversity by sharing teaching and artistic methods. This meeting emphasized that "we may not be different, but we can create change," and also highlighted the transformative impact of theatre and the arts in creating a more inclusive and fair society.
